Barnsley FC’s Community Sports & Education Trust are delighted to announce the start of a new primary school football league that will take place over the Summer Term. Primary schools across Barnsley and Wakefield have been invited to enter the league as part of a package that will also see them receive Barnsley FC match tickets for the players, afterschool club training sessions and the chance to take part in an end of year tournament at Oakwell. 5 schools have entered the league and we hope success will lead to even more schools entering next year. Head-teachers and Sport-Coordinators have identified the league as an opportunity to provide pupils with the chance of competitive sport and also support behaviour and attainment levels in school.
‘It has been made apparent to me from teachers that several schools across Barnsley don’t get many opportunities to play competitive football against other schools, apart from one-off tournaments held only a couple of times over the year. We deliver many in-school initiatives including football training sessions and at times the players are desperate to show off their learned skills in a competitive environment. The football league will provide them with the opportunity to play competitive football on a regular basis against many other players across Barnsley.’

The format of matches will mirror Barnsley FC’s Academy games programme in order to try and give the players the best opportunity to develop their skills and ability. Any players that show a high standard of ability will be invited to Barnsley FC’s Advanced Centre where they will have a chance to progress into the club’s Academy.
‘One question we always seem to be asked by parents and pupils is “Are school going to have a football team this year, and if so how many matches will they get to play?” In the past this has always been a tough one to answer without upsetting people as we have only been able to promise one competition each year and any further games depend on how well we do. The league that has been set up by BFC is just what schools need and something that has been missing for a long time. Not only will our pupils with talents in sport have the ability to showcase their talents but all children are now provided with the opportunity to keep fit – a key point raised recently by OFSTED in judging the quality of P.E. in schools. The combination of a league like this with the additional provision that is available through Barnsley FC’s Community Sport & Education Trust help us to ensure that all our pupils have regular access to physical education. Schools and pupils are far too often judged on their successes through league tables and SATS results and people can forget about the ‘whole child’, the one who likes and excels at sport for example. To me this latest opportunity is what primary school sports have been missing and I hope this league grows from strength to strength’
